Tattoo aftercare

For 7 days after the treatment:

  • I will apply a ‘second skin’ called Tegaderm at the end of your appointment which will protect your tattoo from infection, abrasion, irritation and contamination while it is going through the most important part of its healing. This is to be left on for a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 3 days.

  • Remove the second skin (in a warm shower is best). There may be a buildup of plasma under the second skin and this is completely normal.

  • Gently wash the tattoo with antibacterial soap and water and pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow to air dry to avoid contact with any unwanted bacteria. Then with a clean finger apply a thin layer of moisturiser (Maggie loves Hustle Butter or Palmer’s cocoa butter) 5-7 times a day.

  • During the healing period avoid wearing fake tan in the healing area.

  • Do not pick or touch scabs.

  • Avoid steam rooms, saunas and swimming.

  • Avoid activities that may cause excess sweating.

  • Avoid drinking excess amounts of alcohol.

  • Avoid using creams containing acids or retinol.

For 2 weeks after the treatment:

  • Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds.

  • Stay away from any kind of submersion in water (pool, sea, hot tub or bath). Showering and washing your tattoo with warm or cold water and a mild, fragrance-free, antimicrobial soap is totally fine, and is recommended for hygiene reasons.

  • Avoid facial or skin appointments e.g. chemical peels and forms of exfoliation (if within treatment area).

  • Avoid facial cosmetic procedures e.g. botox and filler (if within treatment area).

More tips and things to remember

  • Immediately after treatment your skin will be red - this can vary depending on client.

  • Your body will produce lymph (plasma) and begin to release this from the skin (this is normal).

  • Some deposits of ink may also remove with the plasma (this is also normal).

  • For the first few days fluid and ink will be released and can leave the tattoo looking blurry under the Tegaderm.

  • Redness, itching and slight irritation may occur in first few days. Do not itch. Slight scabbing is normal. Do not pick the scabs.

  • Do not wear tight clothes over the tattoo. Clothes that stick to your tattoo can be uncomfortable and delay the healing process.

  • Remember that tattoos do not heal crisp and black - they do get duller.

  • Lines will settle, swell slightly and colour will shift.

  • Certain skin tones can heal more blue or green.

  • No two people are the same - Some heal darker and some heal lighter.

  • Same tattoo on different people can heal different.

  • Some peoples tattoos heal crisper whilst others heal softer.

  • Take cool / warm showers. Scalding hot water will not only hurt, but it can also fade the ink.

  • Use sun cream and moisturiser often. When you leave me your ink will be bright and shiny but remember that all tattoos fade over time. Always apply SPF 30+ sun cream on your tattoo, especially in the summer. Moisturise your tattoo daily.
